Earlier this year Schoolreaders Chairman, Jane Whitbread, along with other members of the team, visited the Department of Education for a meeting with Nick Gibb MP, Minister of State for Schools. The meeting raised government awareness of Schoolreaders, and the Department of Education undertook to help us with guidance, endorsement, contacts, and by suggesting routes to funding. Mr Gibb was pleased to hear how the Schoolreaders volunteers are helping children achieve greater reading fluency, speed, confidence and comprehension. He was keen to see the scheme in action, and intends to visit one of our schools soon. Mr Gibb clearly recognised that the success of Schoolreaders rests principally on the shoulders of our dedicated group of volunteers, and he stressed the need to retain as many readers as possible over time. Our thanks to Richard Fuller MP for organising this meeting.
